[Review] Becoming by Michelle Obama

I like Michelle Obama, i like Biographies, so this seemed like a good Idea. Not everything was good, but overall i enjoyed it. The Book was published in 2018 with 480 pages, with the blurb saying:

In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America-the first African-American to serve in that role-she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her-from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it-in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations-and whose story inspires us to do the same.

I listened to the Audiobook, which was about 20 Hours or so, read by Michelle Obama herself.

What i liked

How honest she was. She never sugarcoated the Truth, she said multiple Times how she didnt want or like Barack Obama going inti Polictics. She wanted him to be there for his Family and being a Politican meant he couldnt be there as much as others.

How she talked about Racism. She explained how she felt during college and i totally understood her! Im White, so i cant realte, but Michelle Obama described the Feeling of being the only, or one of the few black People going into a Class, that is full of White People. The Feeling of not belonging there. I had that Feeling once when i walked through Williamsburg, Brooklyn and everyone was dressed according to their Belief of Orthodox Judaism, even Little Children. I have never felt so left out and uncomfortable in my Life. They didnt do anything Right, i just stood out and felt like i didnt belong there.

The Little Deatils she shared to give others a little bit of insight to her new Life when she campaigned. So she learned to eat differently. She would go and get something that would crackle at least, but not eat something that could drip. If so, she would have stains on her Shirt and she cant be photographed like that. She learned to drink less Water, because there were rarely Time for Bathroom Breaks on the Road.

Another great Thing for me personally was, that i learned stuff. Who knew, that in some Areas in America, Kids would stay in when the weather was sunny? Because sunny weather would only mean that Gangs would be more active and therefore Shootings. A save way Home would be to walk in the middle of the Streets, because you would have a better view on esqualating fights and more time to run.

What i didnt like

This Book is detailed and thats what i like, but that was also a downside for me. It dragged, a lot of Times. Sometimes it felt like she would never stop Talking. Every Topic was interesting in one way or another, but it was just so incredible detailed, that i caught myself thinking „Get to the Point.“ There is so much Information to take in. She talked about trying to have a Baby with Barack Obama, about her Teenage Years and whom she dated, about Career and Friends.

It was a fascinating Book all the way. I liked hearing how she grew up, went to college, met Barack Obama and eventually married him. I liked hearing her personal side on Pregnancy, safety and gun violence in America or how it feels to live in the White House. But it is not something to read or listen to in one sitting, because there is simply too much Information and your mind needs to be able to let it all in. I wouldnt join the Hype, but it had some very good aspects.
