This is one of those Books that you think you might enjoy or you atleast hope for it and then they take you by storm. I fell in love with this Book so easily! What if its us was my first Book by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera, but i had heard great things about both authors. It was published in 2018 with 448 pages and this is what it is about:
ARTHUR is only in New York for the summer, but if Broadway has taught him anything, it’s that the universe can deliver a showstopping romance when you least expect it.
BEN thinks the universe needs to mind its business. If the universe had his back, he wouldn’t be on his way to the post office carrying a box of his ex-boyfriend’s things.
But when Arthur and Ben meet-cute at the post office, what exactly does the universe have in store for them . . . ?
Maybe nothing. After all, they get separated.
Maybe everything. After all, they get reunited.
But what if they can’t nail a first date even after three do-overs?
What if Arthur tries too hard to make it work and Ben doesn’t try hard enough?
What if life really isn’t like a Broadway play?
But what if it is? (Source: http://www.harpercollins.com)
I listened to the Audiobook and i have to give a huge thumbs up to both Speaker, Noah Galvin and Froy Gutierrez. They spoke the Book like they were really playing a Role, with different Tones and their Voices painting a Picture in my Head. That was fantastic. I was switching between grinning from ear to ear or just blissfully smiling while listening to it on the Train ride.
Arthur and Ben are our main POV Characters, but there are a few other side Characters, that i liked just as much.
Arthur is the opposite of Ben when it Comes to a Love Life, because he is so unexpierenced. He has never been kissed before, never had a Boyfriend, never had Sex. What i liked most about Arthur was how that was part of his Character. He himself is a Guy, who loved Hamilton and Harry Potter, easily Geeks out over stuff, talks too much, when hes nervous and thinks a lot. But because he is so inexperienced, he is also very much excited and frightened at the same Time. That was very interetsing and cute to read (well, listen in my case).
Ben has his Ex-Boyfriend and because he is his Ex, Bens View on Life and Love is not as enthusiastic as Arthurs. I liked that too because it was just realistic. When Arthur was freaking out about being in New York, Ben was more chill, because that wasnt new to him. So they very much balanced each other out.
The side Characters are not that Deep, but they are fun, realistic and interetsing, so i was fine with that. We have the funny guy, who is Always Good for a comment and the girlfriend, who is a nice barista. We have the Girl with the many Instagram Followers, which also provided a realistic view on that Topic in this day and age. I liked how developed Arthurs Parents were though, usually the Parents get sidelined way too often in YA Novels.
As implied in the blurb, this is not a fairy tale romance. They dont see each other, fall in Love and thats it. Because where would the Story be then? What made the Story so interesting and engaging for me was how realistic it was. Yes, there is Instagram. But you dont always find you are Looking for, right? Sometimes, the plot was so relatable, i would nod. Real Life is no magic and this Book had a Beautiful way of showing its own Version of magic. The Characters meet and interact, but not always smooth without mistakes, without misunderstandings or without bad luck. The Plot was rather predictable at times, but that didnt lessen my excitement in any way.
What a Joy. To read or Listen! I loved the Humour the Book has, as well as some Pretty accurate Lines, rather Deep thoughts about racism, Heritage, homophobia, Life and what we expect from it, social media and Relationsships in General, not only love related, but also Friendship and Family. To top that, the Book was full of refernces to Hamilton and Harry Potter. Of Course, you would have to know and love both to get the references and love them. But if you do, it makes so much more fun.
I never had Trouble understanding the Book and, which is special and amazing for co-writers, i wouldnt be able to say „This was written by A, this was written by B!“, because the Authors fit together perfectly, you could think it was written only by one. Of Course that could also be because i have never read a Book by either of them before.
What im not too sure about is the Ending. I certainly love the Idea of it, but i havent decided if i like the Execution really.
A fantastic YA Gay Romance Novel with likeable and interesting Characters, lots of Humour and Fandom References. A Magic on its own, even when its not the fairytale kind of magic. Now i have to put the other Books by both Authors up on my reading List.
„I didnt also have a box beside me with Mementos from a relationship that was supposed to be everything and stopped being anything.“ (p. 34)
