[Review] Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Do you know one of those Books that you see everywhere but you somehow dont start to read them? And then one Day you finally decide to read them. This is how i felt with Shatter Me, because im really late to the Party. It is a Party of Joy because i loved this Book so much and here is why.

What is the Book about?

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war– and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice:
Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

The Characters

We meet Three Main Characters and basically two Side Characters. The Main Characters are Juliette, Adam and Warner, the Side Character are Kenji and James. As you can already see by the Names, that is 1 Woman and 4 Boys. But that didnt bother me during reading, because all Characters brought something interesting to the Table.

Juliette is our Main Character, our Point of View and she has the Problem of being in Prsion because her Hands, her Touch even is deadly for other People. I liked Juliette from the Start! Her Character is emotional, but that is given when you think about her circumstances in Life. Her Strenght is not her Humour, but her Mind. She thinks so much and i thought it was so fascinating to have a Main Character who think so much, sees and feels so much. Everything is intense and while there is a fine Line of such Characters getting annoying throughout the Book, that is not a Problem here. Never actually, because Tahereh Mafi writes so powerful and deep, that i couldnt help but feel for Juliette, feel with Juliette and she never ever annoyed me. She is a very thought trough Character based on her Past and how she reacts and thinks in her Present or of her Future. I really liked her.

I really liked Adam too. Juliette gets to know him in Prison and here come Expactations in Play. I had always just heard about Juliette and Warner online, so i had no Idea of Adam being an important Character. But he was and what i liked about him is that he is not only a sweet Guy, but also interesting. He has a past, he has Doubts and while he cares for his little Brother James, he is also not perfect. James is a very fun side Character in a cute Brother way, but smart and brave for his Age, so i liked him too.

Warner is a the Villian of the Story and i had heard his Name so much before, i didnt know what to expect. Maybe a Bad Boy, a Bookboyfriend, somebody to like? Certainly not what i got: A manipulating Man. I was amazed but how cruel he was. Trough the whole Book i just kept thinking: „What do People like about him? Why?“ I really get why he is interesting, because the Character provides some great Dialouge and wit, but other than that i didnt like him.

Kenji is a cool Character, that i didnt thought would stick around. But he did and im glad.

The Writing

That to me is the biggest Strenght of the Book. Tahereh Mafi has a really unique style of writing and i would say it is clearly not for everyone. I suggest reading the first Chapter and then decide if teh writing is for you or not. I for once was hooked right from the start. The first Page just got me and i knew i would love this Book. The Sentences are short, but on Point and as Rhetorical Device, some Lines are crossed out. I will give you an Example on what to expect:

„Arent you hungry?“ His Voice is lower now, a Little worried now.

I’ve been starving for 264 Days. „No.“

(p. 10)

I think such writing is marvellous because it is unique and facinating and i just thought as a Reader you could really dig deep into the Characters Thoughts, which makes for an even better reading experience. Some of her Writing felt like Poetry to me.

What is Happening?

While the Writing and the Characters are the Main Factor for loving this Book so much, it is also the great Plot that helps. I like how much happens. Time doesnt stand still, because Juliette and Adam are in Prison and even there it really is a Pageturner. After they go on a Run, teh Suspense Level rises and Things turn for some Twists.

Conclusion

The Book is really a Special Read with a unique writing style and some great Characters. I can only recommend it if you like YA Novels and a strong female Main Characters with Love Interests, who are more than just pretty.

Favourite Quote

„There are so many things I want to say and scream but somehow I’ve forgotten all about the words waiting patiently in my mouth.“ (p. 88)

2 Gedanken zu “[Review] Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

  1. Wundervolle Rezension!
    Emily

    1. Hey Emily!
Oh, ganz viel Spaß bei Ignite Me!
      Yvonne
